One-Day Twin Coast Cycle Trail Ride –  E-Bike

Experience one of New Zealand’s easiest Great Rides with a relaxed, mostly downhill cycle from our Kaikohe base to either the Bay of Islands in the east or Hokianga Harbour in the west.

Choose your preferred coast when booking. We’ll provide your e-bike, helmet, trail information and afternoon shuttle from the end of your ride.

Your ride

Kaikohe is the highest point of the Twin Coast Cycle Trail, allowing you to enjoy a largely downhill ride towards your chosen coast.

Choose between:

• East: Kaikohe to Kawakawa or Ōpua
• West: Kaikohe to Horeke and Māngungu Mission

Allow approximately four hours of cycling, plus time for stops and sightseeing.

Most of the trail is Grade 1–2. The westbound route includes a short Grade 3 section between Ōkaihau and the Utakura Valley, so moderate fitness and confidence are recommended.

Starting your day

Unless you’ve selected our Paihia shuttle, meet at:

Top Trail Base - 39 Rankin Street, Kaikohe

Please arrive at the time shown in your booking confirmation. We’ll fit your e-bike, provide your trail information and confirm your shuttle arrangements before you set off.

Safe car parking is available at our Kaikohe base.

Staying in Paihia?

A complimentary 8.30am shuttle from the Paihia Maritime Building is available for riders cycling east. We’ll transfer you to our Kaikohe base and return you to Paihia after your ride.

This service is available for eastbound rides only and is subject to a minimum of two passengers. Choose Paihia as your start point when booking. Advance booking is essential. Solo travellers may request the Paihia shuttle, subject to another passenger booking on the same date. We’ll contact you if the minimum passenger number is not met.

Eastbound ride: Kaikohe to Kawakawa or Ōpua

Cycle east from Kaikohe through farmland, native bush and historic railway corridors towards Kawakawa and the Bay of Islands.

Your finishing point and shuttle time will depend on whether the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway Cycle–Train Connection is operating on your riding date.

When the train is operating

Cycle approximately 3km beyond Kawakawa to Taumārere Station.

Allow plenty of time and aim to leave Kawakawa by 2.50pm, arriving at Taumārere Station by 3.15pm.

Load your bike onto the train and enjoy a scenic journey alongside the Waikare Estuary to Whangae Station. From there, continue cycling to Ōpua. The train must be booked separately and spaces are limited.

Ōpua shuttle

Pick-up time: 4.15pm
Meeting point: Ōpua Marina carpark, 26 Baffin Street, Ōpua

We’ll return you to either our Kaikohe base or the Paihia Maritime Building if you selected the Paihia shuttle when booking.

Please ensure the mobile number supplied with your booking is switched on and available for calls or text messages.

If the train is delayed, our shuttle team will monitor the situation and wait where practicable.

When the train is not operating

Pick-up time: 3.00pm
Meeting point: Te Hononga Centre carpark, Kawakawa

We’ll return you to Kaikohe or Paihia, depending on the start point selected when booking.

If time allows, you may continue approximately 3km from Kawakawa to Taumārere before returning to Kawakawa for your shuttle.

Westbound Ride: Kaikohe to Māngungu

Cycle approximately 42km west from Kaikohe through Ōkaihau and the Utakura Valley, finishing beside the Hokianga Harbour at Māngungu Mission. Highlights include native bush, rural scenery, riverside riding, wetlands, boardwalks and views across the Hokianga Harbour.

Māngungu Shuttle

Pick-up time: 3.00pm

Meeting point: Māngungu Mission, just beyond Horeke

We’ll collect you and your bike and return you to our Kaikohe base. Māngungu has beautiful harbour views and a grassy area where you can relax while waiting for the shuttle. The complimentary Paihia shuttle is not available for the westbound ride.
