2 DAY -Ultimate Coast to Coast - E Bike

A total of 87 kms from the Bay of Islands in the east to the Hokianga harbour on the west coast.

Moderate fitness is needed as the section from Okaihau to Maungunu Mission is a grade 3 trail but the rest is grade 1-2

It follows both historic rail and walking pathways through the estuary, bush, towns, and rural settings and includes a boardwalk over wetlands.

Arrive in Kaikohe both mornings to start your cycle and you will be picked up each afternoon by shuttle and returned to Kaikohe - one day from the Eastern side Opua/ Kawakawa and the other day from Horeke / Mangungu

We recommend cycling the trail this way as Kaikohe, in the centre of the track, is the highest point and so the majority of your cycle is downhill

Meet at our base 39 Rankin Street Kaikohe to pick up your bike  9-11am. Let us know on the first morning whether you will be bringing your bike back to the depot overnight or keeping it with you in a secure place. 

You will get a confirmation with your shuttle timings and dates  but here is an idea to help you plan

EASTERN SHUTTLE

There are two possible options for this depending on whether the Vintage Train connection is running https://bayofislandsvintagerailway.org.nz/

A - Scheduled Shuttle from Opua back to Kaikohe with 4.15pm
pick up - your bike included.   

Cycle to Taumarere station - 3kms past Kawakawa and meet
the train there. We recommend that you depart Kawakawa by 2.50pm to be sure you
get to the Taumarere station on time.

MEET AT TAUMARERE AT 3.15 PM
FOR  TRANSFER BY TRAIN TO WHANGAE STATION - you ride your bike to the
station and then put it on the train enjoy a 30 minute scenic train journey
along the Waikare esturary to Whangae station - get off the train and ride the
last 2.5 kms to Opua to meet our shuttle at 4.15 pm

B Scheduled Shuttle from Kawakawa with 3pm pick up

Any day that the train is not operating - your pick up will be 3pm in Kawakawa. You can cycle a further 3kms from Kawakawa to Taumarere and return to Kawakawa for the shuttle

WESTERN SHUTTLE

Scheduled daily Shuttle from Mangungu to Kaikohe, the mid point of the trail in Kaikohe after cycling 42 km to the western end of the trail 

We will pick you and your bike up at 3pm from Mangungu Mission at the end of the trail - just a little further than Horeke. Great views and nice grassy area to wait.
